چکیده

This paper addresses the problem of ice-relative underwater robotic vehicle navigation relative to moving or stationary contiguous sea ice. A review previously-reported under-ice methods is given, as well motivation for use vehicles with precision capabilities. We then describe our proposed approach, which employs two more satellite beacons atop ice along other and ship mounted sensors estimate vehicle, ice, states by means an Extended Kalman Filter. performances sensitivity analysis a simulated 7.7 km under survey reported. The number location deployed beacons, rotational translational velocity, separation ship-based acoustic range are varied, their effects on error uncertainty examined. Results suggest that increasing and/or ice-deployed reduces uncertainty, whereas has little impact uncertainty. Decreasing velocity also correlated reduced Our suggests method feasible can offer scientifically useful accuracy over operating conditions.

Phytoplankton blooms beneath the sea ice in the Chukchi sea

In the Arctic Ocean, phytoplankton blooms on continental shelves are often limited by light availability, and are therefore thought to be restricted to waters free of sea ice. During July 2011 in the Chukchi Sea, a large phytoplankton bloom was observed beneath fully consolidated pack ice and extended from the ice edge to 4100 km into the pack. The bloom was composed primarily of diatoms, with ...

Advances in Doppler-Based Navigation of Underwater Robotic Vehicles

New low-cost commercially available bottom-lock doppler sonars can augment or replace the acoustic timeof-flight navigation systems commonly employed for threedimensional underwater robot vehicle navigation. This paper first reviews conventional techniques for underwater vehicle navigation, and describes a doppler-based navigation system recently developed by the authors. Second, we identify pr...

Combined Doppler/LBL Based Navigation of Underwater Vehicles

This paper first reviews conventional techniques for underwater vehicle navigation, and describes a dopplerbased navigation system recently implemented by the authors. Experimental results show that a system combining conventional long-baseline (LBL) acoustic navigation data with doppler navigation data provides superior navigation precision and update rates in comparison to raw LBL or doppler ...

Limitations of access have long restricted exploration and investigation of the cavities beneath ice shelves to a small number of drillholes. Studies of sea-ice underwater morphology are limited largely to scientific utilization of submarines. Remotely operated vehicles, tethered to a mother ship by umbilical cable, have been deployed to investigate tidewater-glacier and ice-shelf margins, but ...
